Friends as mediators in study abroad contexts in Japan: negotiating stereotypical discourses about Japanese culture

Upon encountering unfamiliar words or observing local practices in study abroad contexts, second language learners may discuss aspects of the target and culture with their peers – 'non-native' friends from same cultural background 'natives' culture. Such mediations are instrumental elaborating understandings, but naturally conditioned by participants’ intercultural stances, including appreciation similarities/differences. This examines interpretive work carried out two Japanese respective reading a manga (short comics) depicting allegedly ‘typical’ behaviour around honne, i.e. restraint expressing one’s feelings opinions. We observe rather different negotiation styles ideologies at play argumentations them relation to dynamics generated assumption epistemic authority claimed (and granted to) native-speaker friend, vs. more collaborative case non-native friend. The lack dominant authoritative source appears generate nuanced possibilities, enabling challenges established stereotypical discourses about characteristics. analysis illustrates which potentially question widely held equally ideological) beliefs unqualified advantages periods for learning.
